Sat, Dec 27

Good day everyone ...By now you all have had your Christmas dinner ...

I'm sure that you all enjoyed yourselves, including the 3 F's, lots of great Family, Friends and Food!!!Now is the time to think of exercising, wearing off a little of that Christmas turkey or baking!

Many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits. As usual, we'll meet Saturday morning at Bushtukah, at 9:00am! Who knows, if your not shopped out, you may want to take a look at their Boxing Day bargains! It's crazy weather that we've had, and tomorrow won't be any different, probably finished the freezing rain, but possible ice underneath, so be careful! There may be possibility of rain or not, and temperatures will be climbing, almost reaching balmy levels as the day goes on!So, hope that you can make it tomorrow, as it'll be the last meeting of 2008!!!!!Maybe you might want to reply to this if you're going or not!

****Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. ~Oprah Winfrey

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!! BEST WISHES FOR 2009!!!!!

Friday Ski, Dec 19

After last week's work on the 'flats', I think we should do a little work on hills and trails ... and what better place than Nakkertok!
There is a $5.00 visitor fee.

So- Friday, 9:30, Nakkertok South parking lot. Bring lunch.

http://english.nakkertok.ca/

This web-site will give you driving directions to Nakkertok - bottom, right side of the first page.

By Friday, snow conditions should be perfect! But, if there is any change in conditions, I"ll send out an email on Thursday night.

Saturday, Dec 13

What a week it has been! I'm sure everyone has either been impacted by the snowstorm and/or bus strike, or know someone that has! Luckily for Sat morning, no one has to rely on the buses to get to Bushtukah's!

It may be a little chilly tomorrow morning, but at least we won't be pushing our way through some 30cm of snow!!!! In fact, we may even have a little sun out there!

So, dress for the weather and come on out and get a little exercise. It'll help lessen some of the guilty feeling we get at this time of year with all the great food we'll be tasting. :)

I'm sure that we'll have walkers and runners, so there'll be company for all.

See you at Bushtukah at 9:00am

We will follow the ski with coffee at 'Les Saisons 'in Old Chelsea for those who would like to chat and warm up.

Please Reply All so that car pools could be arranged.

Friday Ski - Dec 5

I was skiing this morning, and there is a lovely layer of soft, fresh snow waiting for us on Friday!

Meet at P. 8.
From the raised intersection in Old Chelsea, continue straight for about 1/2 km. You will see P 8 on your right at the first intersection. The road to the right and left will be closed for skiing. It is a big parking lot and there is an outhouse there.

We will ski out-and-back, to the end of this section of road, affectionately called The Doldrums! It is a great place for warming up your ski legs and practicing the style that you have forgotten from last year. Coaching will be available if you ask! ;-)

Because this will be out first ski this year, we will not go to a cabin for lunch. Instead, we will go to Les Saisons in Old Chelsea for coffee after skiing. You will see a two-story, red brick house, on your right, just before the Raised Intersection.

If you want to check for Ski Conditions and Wax of the Day - go to this web-site. They usually post the day's recommended wax after 8:00.

Please let others know if you are coming so car pools can be formed.

Saturday, Nov 22

"Life in itself is an empty canvas, it becomes whatsoever you paint on it. You can paint misery, you can paint bliss. This freedom is your glory." --- Osho

Maybe we should paint Sunny Saturday Mornings!

Alas, the sun is coming out for tomorrow!!! Just be sure to dress for the cool start to the day!

By now, I'm sure everyone has heard the very sad news of Yolaine Madge's passing. Yolaine through the years had been part of our Saturday morning group in the early years as well as part of the Survivor Clinics. In fact for many years, Yolaine was a Group Leader at the Merivale Survivor Clinic, aiding and inspiring many of the women.

Many of you may not have known this, but a few years after taking her first 'Learn To Run' Survivor Clinic, Yolaine decided to run her very first 1/2 Marathon. Not only did she run it, she ran it very well. She mentioned to me a number of times how being out there doing a run made her feel so good! That big smile of hers made others feel good too! We'll miss you, Yolaine,!

So, here's to meeting tomorrow morning at Bushtukah, at 9:00am. Maybe we can dedicate our run/walk tomorrow to Yolaine!

Saturday, November 8, 2008

Goodday everyone ...

Another absolutely gorgeous day!!!!! No excuses for not getting out and at least getting some fresh air!

Judy has made a suggestion about taking our walk/run to a new site and participate in the "Santa Shuffle" on Dec 6th. It is a fundraiser for the Salvation Army, who are always so invaluable an organization, especially at Christmas.
Note ... there is a new location, on Colonel By.
Here is the website
http://www.events.runningroom.com/site/?raceId=3656

While tomorrow has a forecast for showers, I bet that we get our run/walk in without the showers! Wouldn't hurt to bring a change of top though.

Meriday, we were all sending powerful, positive thoughts your way on Wednesday! Understandable if we don't see you Saturday, but who knows, you may not be able to stay away from us! :)

Have a great day everyone ... get out and enjoy this day!!!!

See you tomorrow
Jennifer
See? We've walked and ran in the rain before... :-)

Friday hike, Nov 7

This week the trails should be okay to do a trek to Western Lodge up "McCloskey Road" (#2). Meet at P12, the boat launch lot halfway along Meech Lake. (same place we started for the Ramparts) Time 9:30. Please let me know if you are coming, and if you need more instructions.

Advice from an oldtimer!-- If you listen to a forecast, plan for the minimum temperature. The maximum usually doesn't happen until well into the afternoon (when we are on the way home). Always have hat and gloves (in case) this time of year. A bare head is like leaving an upstairs window open -- the basement gets cold. (Last week we certainly needed boots, hat and gloves to start. We saw skiers and had snow over our boot tops!)

This trail goes up pretty steeply at first, and if anyone wants a shorter hike she can just retrace the route.

Judy (nee McCloskey), we expect you to bone up on your family history, as we'll be in the area of your ancestors' farm!

Sat, Oct 25 - New meeting place

Time: 9:00 am

Location: Cancer Survivor Park, corner of Alta Vista and Industrial (across from the main Alta Vista post office)

Directions:
Take the Queensway to the Vanier Parkway/Riverside Drive.
Take Riverside to Industral. Turn onto Industrial at the post office.
Take the next right onto Alta Vista.
Turn left into the Alta Vista apartments.
Go to the back apartment - #1535 and park in the parking lot on the Industrial side of the building. There are signs that say post office parking.

Hike - Fri, Oct 24

Hi All-

I was at Camp Fortune today and found the Parkway closed with "closed for the season" signs. This means starting elsewhere.

For something completely different, let's meet at Pine Road at 9:30. The trail is a simple out and return of about 5 km (each way) to a lodge. If anyone wants to turn around before the lodge it's simple to return to the parking lot.

Go to the end of Highway #5, turning right to join Hwy 105. TURN LEFT on 105. Pine Road is less than 1 km along. TURN LEFT. The parking lot (#16) is about 1 km down Pine Road. (I got lost last winter partly due to construction detours. If anyone has local knowledge and better directions please reply!)
It probably won't take much longer to get there as most of it is on Hwy 5. Please let me know if you are coming and that you know about the change.

Saturday, Oct 18

Hello everyone ...

Wasn't that an absolutely fabulous weekend? Weatherwise and foodwise I'm sure!!!!

I know that this is late notice, but it seems that many of the usual suspects won't be meeting tomorrow morning ...

So, unless you reply 'To All' with your intentions, you may end up out there by yourselves.

NEXT WEEK:

I have a request for meeting next week at the new Survivor's Park at the corner of Alta Vista/Riverside/Industrial.
Chris is going to check into parking and we'll let you know by next week. Should be a good walk/run, maybe over by the river?

Also, good shopping very nearby for after ...

Have a great weekend

Friday Hike, Oct 17

Hi hikers-

What a wonderful spell of weather we've had! It still looks good for Friday, but somewhat colder.

While the Parkway is still open, we'll start from a lot not accessible later on. Meet at KEOGAN parking lot at 9:30. From Old Chelsea head towards Camp Fortune and up the Fortune Parkway from P10 (driving up that long grind we usually ski up). Keogan lot is about 3 km on the left where the Ridge Road (Trail #1) crosses the Parkway. (You'll pass Fortune Lake on the way.)

Please let me know if you are coming.

Wear off your turkey - Sat Oct 11

Isn't this a beautiful week? And the weekend promises to be better!!!!!

Congratulations to all that ran and walked this past weekend at the Run For The Cure! Another fabulous year!!!!
What a crowd, upwards of 11,000 people!!!!!

I can imagine that everyone will be enjoying some pretty great dinners this weekend, probably turkey and all the fixings! So, wouldn't it be a great idea to get out and enjoy a fabulous walk or run, get plenty of fresh air and enjoy the beauty of the leaves?

I am away this weekend, but unless anyone plans something else, let's say that you all meet at Bushtukah at 9:00am. A walk or run down by the parkway would be beautiful!

Have a great week and Happy Thanksgiving!!

Jennifer

Friday Hike, Oct 10

Peggy has asked me to carry on with leading the hikes while she heads off to Africa (back Nov 11). Looks like a nice day this Friday!

Meet at 9:30 at the PENGUIN Picnic lot. Coming from Old Chelsea, carry on over the "raised intersection" (towards Meech) to the intersection with the Parkway. TURN LEFT onto the Parkway. The picnic area is about 1 km on your right. This section of the Parkway usually has spectacular colours.

If you are travelling from the west end (Champlain Bridge) the easiest is to take the Gatineau Parkway from Hull (from Tache Blvd). After about 10km there is a left fork to Champlain Lookout (do not take it). Keep straight and the picnic area is about 4km on the left (shortly after Kingsmere Rd )

Please let me know if you plan to come. I think most of you have your usual carpools organized and can copy each other. You can "reply all" if you want to make other contacts, but as many on the list cannot come usually, they may not want unnecessary reply alls.

The hike should be similar to last week in length (3 hrs). Bring the usual -- food, drink, etc.

The dragonboat connection all know me, but FYI my contacts are:

Friday Hike, Oct 3

Hi Everyone,

It could be a little cooler by Friday, so check the weather for appropriate gear!

Meet at the Canoe Launch parking lot, P 12.

We will hike to the Ramparts, where there is a wonderful lookout, lesser frequented than the Tawadina lookout that we visited last week. If we are lucky enough to have a sunny day, the view will be spectacular!!

Bring lunch, water, snacks and an extra layer to put on at lunch time if it is a cool day.

BTW ... my new cell number is 613.608-8369 ... just in case!!

Directions...
From Old Chelsea, go straight through the raised intersection, continue for 1/2 km.
Turn Right and follow about 3 km to a STOP sigh.
turn RIGHT following toward Meech Lake.
You will pass O'Brian Beach where we met 2 weeks ago.
Follow the road which will hug the shore of Meech lake for about km.
Watch for the Canoe Launch parking lot on your left.

If the weather forecast is not in our favour, I will email on Thursday night to cancel ... I hope not!!

Peggy

Saturday, Sept 27

There's been a request, or suggestion, for a change of venue for this Saturday morning! The new place would be at the Rockcliffe Boathouse Restaurant. That is where we'd meet to park, for our starting point and of course for our finish and breakfast!

It's a bit tricky to get to, but will be worth it! The driveway entrance is located to the right side, (east side) of the lookout on the Rockcliffe Parkway, on the river side. If you're not careful, you may pass it by. If you're coming from the downtown area, it is east of the Prime Minister's residence, but west of the RCMP horse stables. We'll go for the same time, 9:00 am, but will hang around for a few minutes if we know you're coming.

If I've confused you with the directions, maybe think of contacting Anka, as she's really in the know with getting to this spot.See you Saturday!

Saturday, Sept 20

We are only a few weeks till the Run For The Cure ... so ... now is as good as time as any to practice! We'll be out on Saturday morning, whether it be walking, poling or running, so come out and join us.

Also, in order to get your name on a team shirt, get your registration in by Sept 19th, tomorrow. Remember, the team name is "Just Doing It" and the team captain is Sylvia Walton. The link is

Let's all get out there and once again demonstrate a strong, active, mighty force of survivors, living life to the fullest!!! Saturday, Aug 30

I'm away for the next few weeks and probably won't be updating this blog. You can probably assume that the group will meet at Bushtukah at 9, unless you hear otherwise from Jennifer.

Saturday, Aug 23

Finally, Summer Has Arrived!!!!!! Isn't this beautiful weather? I hear that the next few months will be like this!!!

I know that this message is out late, but late is better than never ...

Guess we'll be meeting at Bushtukah tomorrow morning, at 9:00. Some will be walking, others will be running. What we've been doing the last little while, is trying to get back into some running, so this past week we did Run 2 minutes, Walk 1 minutes and this week it'll go to 3 and 1. So, if you're into trying to get on track, come out and join us.

We'll probably decide in the morning, but one option for breakfast is Donna's on the patio, as it will be a gorgeous morning!

See you then
Jennifer

PS from Chris: Watch for more information about joining the "Just Doing It" team. Now is the time to be training to walk, run or pole the Run for a Cure in the fall.

Saturday, Aug 16

Now that the MS bike tour is over and folks are back from dragon boat festivals, let's get back to our normal routine of meeting on Saturday morning. Some of us are walking, some are running, and some are poling.

See you at 9:00 at Bushtekka.

Thursday, August 7, 2008

Saturday Aug 9

Quite a few people are away this weekend doing the MS bike tour. I'm not sure who might be around, so someone might want to send a message out to see if anyone is WRAP'ing this weekend.

Saturday August 2

It looks like just about everyone is away this weekend, so I guess we can take a break from the weekly WRAP group. Have fun and be safe (unlike the people in the picture!). Kids - don't try this at home!

Saturday, July 26

Some of us are planning to bike this weekend because the MS bike tour is coming up quickly.

Here's a picture of the bike I'll be riding in the tour. :-)

Biking: Chris, Anka, Sylvia, Judy
Running: Sue, Elaine & Nigel
Walking: Patty & Margot
Away: Jennifer, Marie-andrée, Dianne, Mary, Elaine A, Mary O.

Biking - Friday July 25

Destination: Petrie Island
Distance: 50 km

Details to follow.

Bikers: Sylvia, Anka, Chris.

Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Saturday, July 19

It looks like there are a lot of people away this weekend (Chris, Jen, Jean, Judy, Sylvia, + + +) so there may be a smaller turnout this weekend. Unless the folks who will be here want to organize to meet somewhere else, the standard meeting place is Bushtaka at 9:00.

Thursday, July 10, 2008

Saturday, July 12

Location: Keg Manor, 529 Richmond Road (go west from Bushteka - it's on the same side of the road)

Parking: Park in the far corner of the back lot

Time: 9:00 as usual

Brunch: Bring something to contribute - but not too much and nothing difficult! If everyone brought enough of something for 4, it should work out fine. (e.g. 4 bagels, 4 servings fruit salad, 4 boiled eggs, etc.).

Coffee: For those of us who need our coffee (that's me!), I have a huge coffee dispenser I can bring that should be enough for all. I'm terrible at making coffee, so I can get it filled up at Tim's and everyone who wants coffee can just chip in a buck or whatever it costs.

Utensils: Please bring a mug and any utensils needed for the food you bring. I'll bring a tablecloth and napkins.

Here's a message from our fearless leader, Jennifer:

Hello everyone ...Summer is definitely here! Humidity plus out there, so don't forget whatever you're doing, to make sure that you're well hydrated!Remember those winter days of snowfall after snowfall, and we were wishing for our beautiful, sunny, hot summer days! Well, they're here!!!!

One idea is that last week some of us ran thru the gardens at Maplelawn. That was a real treat, followed by a bit of time along the Parkway, which was somewhat shaded. Then we ventured to Donna's for breakfast on the patio. All and all, quite a nice morning!

Enjoy the rest of the week and see you on Saturday!!!!

"When we feel stuck, going nowhere -- even starting to slip backward -- we may actually be backing up to get a running start.." --- DAN MILLMAN

"After the game, the king and the pawn go into the same box." from Dianne Stokoe

Biking - Friday July 11

Time: 9:00 am
Location: parking lot by the Champlain (Island Park) bridge
Bring: lunch
Kms: 41+

Not sure how many kms we are doing this week, but it was 41.5 last week, so I'm assuming it will be more than that!! And I just recovered from last week...

Thursday, July 3, 2008

Saturday, July 5

OK, I do believe that the weather pattern has turned the corner, (except for today) and that we will have an absolutely beatiful day on Saturday!!!!!

Last week we managed to finish our walk/run before the rain, but it started up right after, so we were forced to sit in an enclosed patio for breakfast, with the patio doors all open. So it was almost like sitting outside!

Well, I am quite confident in saying that we will have a gorgeous morning, this coming Saturday, for walking or running, so do come out and join us!!

If any of you come up with ideas for an alternative place to meet, and /or for breakfast after, please feel free to suggest it. If possible, we should not leave any big changes till Friday, as some people don't get their e-mails on Fridays.

So, come on out and join in Saturday morning!!!! We're all a little rusty, so not to think that you're the only one that may feel that way! :)

Saturday, May 24

Hello everyone ...

At last, some decent Spring weather!!!

Most of you have already figured out that it's not a great weekend for our usual Saturday morning Triathlon! That's an unofficial triathlon mind you, 'Walk/Run', Chatting and Breakfast! :)

Most people are tied up with one thing or another, so this is just to let everyone know that we won't be meeting this week, so no one ends up there alone.

Good Luck to Busting Out and their Bake Sale at the Glebe Garage Sale! Their goodies are bound to sell quickly, so remember, 'The Early Bird Gets The Worm' so to speak!

Good Luck also to those participating in National Capital Race Weekend! I don't know what everyone is doing, but I do know that Anka and I are joining Dianne Stokoe in her very first 1/2 Marathon! You Go Girl!

Feel free to reply to this if you're participating in another Event, so we can all wish you well!!!!

So, whether you're volunteering your time, cruising the Garage Sale, participating in Race Weekend, or tending to your gardens, "Have a Great Weekend Everyone!!!!"

After this weekend, I am off for the next 3 weekends (traveling in Europe), so plan amongst yourselves for the weekly Run/Walk gathering.

See you next month!

Jennifer

Thursday, May 15, 2008

Hello everyone ...

Looks like pretty decent weather for the weekend ... hope that you all get a chance to be outdoors.

Last minute thing for me and I have to be out of town, so won't be there on Saturday. I'm sure though, that there will be others going out and enjoying being outdoors!

Have a great long weekend everbody!

Jennifer

OK, I guess I better take some spring pictures... :-)

BCA Wellness Event - Saturday May 10

Hello everyone ...

For those of you that were there on Saturday, when I said you wouldn't hear from me this week, well, I was wrong!

Just thought I'd remind you all about the Wellness Day at St Elias Church that is being held on the Saturday. Elaine Scarboro has sent out the program a few days ago. Elaine also suggested meeting on Sunday instead.

Many of you have indicated that you were planning on going to the BCA Wellness Event, and some of you weren't realizing that you may be missing our Saturday morning ritual walk/run.

So, perhaps if you're still planning on going, you could let others know or maybe even contact them to let them know. You could also do this thru the blog that Chris Lynds has created, and here is the link.
http://saturdaywrapgroup.blogspot.com/

I won't be there this week, so don't wait for me.

We should all be back on schedule the following Saturday, May 17th.

Have a great weekend!!!!

Jennifer

Friday, May 2, 2008

Hello everyone ...

Heather has asked me to find out a few things.

Are any of you planning on participating in the May 24th-25th National Capital Weekend and if so, are you using your poles?

Are any of you planning on participating in the Weekend To End Breast Cancer, and if so are you doing it with your poles?

Are there any other events that you might be participating in and using your poles?

If yes to any of the above, could Heather approach you for a comment or feedback on using the poles?

Also, if you haven't done it before, could you please give Heather and Urban Poling some feedback on using the poles, especially how it might relate to issues that we might have as survivors. Heather's e-mail address is
wilddaisy@rogers.com

Thanks everyone
Jennifer

May 3 - 40% of rain... or not!

Well the forecast has improved for tomorrow morning and now we're down to a 40% chance of rain ... so that means a good chance that it won't rain! :)

Some dates to remember are May 24-25th weekend, National Capital Race Weekend and the following weekend, the Busting Out training weekend at Cascade.

Have a great day!

Jennifer

As mentioned before, I am posting random picture of W.R.A.P. members, to keep things interesting. Do you recognize this brave snowshoer?

Meet at Bushtuka this week

What a gorgeous week we've had, eh? Many of you have probably been busy raking or cleaning your gardens! Didn't that rain on Wed. night make everything so green! What a big and beautiful change!
I finally got rid of my snow last weekend, and that was only because I shoveled most of it onto my driveway or the road!

Well, tomorrow the rains will hold off for us, at least that's the order I have put in. We will meet at Bushtukah by 9:00am, and go off in our various directions. Some will be walking and some will be running, but most will be doing breakfast!

I believe that registration fees go up April 30th for National Capital Race Weekend, for all the distances. There's only 4 weeks till National Capital Race Weekend!

Have a great day and enjoy the beautiful weather!

April 26

Because we really didn't talk about it this morning, I assume we'll be meeting at Bushteka at 9:00 next week as usual.
To make these postings more interesting, I think I should post random pictures of the group participants. This is a great one!

April 19

Today is an absolutely beautiful day and tomorrow is promising for more of the same!!!

What a great motivating force to get out of the house, get some exercise and and visit with your friends!!! You can't ask for anything more than the fabulous weather that we're going to have for the next few days!

So, put on your shorts and get out and meet us all a Bushtukah Saturday morning at 9:00am. If possible, park on the street, as we don't want to tie up the parking lot too much!

If you haven't been getting out for a while, now's your time to be out there. The trees are budding, the birds are singing and flowers are actually showing their lovely faces!!!

Also, if you're planning on the 5k or 10k walks for National Capital, it is only 5 weeks away and so you should be out there for sure!!

Heather, who taught us the Urban Poling clinic has asked me to pass on this info re: Meetup Groups. This would be a fun way to get in more walks and meet new people.
See below for more info.

Hi Dragon Boaters,

I am sending this invitation out to all past clinic/class participants. I have started a Meetup Group for clinic/class participants who are interested in getting together with other avid uban poling enthusiasts. The first meetup is scheduled for April 30th at 6 pm. I will be scheduling gatherings on varied evenings/locations throughout the spring/summer.The aim of the group is to encourage and motivate each other to continue to enjoy the benefits of urban poling. And to share fun, friendship and fitness!

Participants must bring their own poles and have completed an Intro Clinic, class or lesson.
To join, visit:
http://walkers.meetup.com/577/ and register. There is no fee to join the meetup once you've completed a clinic. If you have friends who'd be interested in joining, they can check out the upcoming 90 min Introduction to Urban Poling locations and date information on my website.

Hope you're out enjoying some great walks in the sun and will look forward to seeing you soon!!

Sincerely,

Heather
