Sat, Aug 22

Hello everyone ...

We sure have had the hottest part of our summer in the last week or so, haven't we? I can't remember the last time that the humidex was up to 42C or so, like it was on Monday?

Things should be better for our Saturday morning. We'll meet at Bushtukah for 9:00am and do "our thing"! Then, head for Donna's, and breakfast for 10:15.

We should be able to get our early weekend activities in before we're possibly impacted by "Bill". The poor East Coast looks to be right in line for Bill!
Don't know what system is working on us right now, other than our typical wacky summer weather?

So, see you on Saturday!

Better weather this Saturday - just for us!

Good day everyone!!!

My hope is that all of you survived the rains to date without flooding!

I have put an order in for good weather for Saturday morning, so come on out and join us. We all must be in need of a good shot of Vitamin D.

Congrats to the teams that went to North Bay and St Catharines! Both Festivals had maore than their fair share of rain, and made the best of it. Even though DB is a water sport, we don't need all that extra water!!!!

So, for this Saturday, come on out and meet us for 9:00am at Bushtukah's. I'm so positive about the weather, I think that we can probably even have our breakfast out on the patio!

Cheers

Saturday July 25

Hello everyone!!!!

I am going to go out on a limb and say that we can get our run/walk in this week without rain!!!!!! They may come later in the day, but will hold off for our run/walk! If the humidity hangs on till then, be extra aware of bringing water with you to re-hydrate yourselves!

So, we'll meet at Bushtukah by 9:00am and do breakfast by 10:15. I know that many are going to St Catharines for the Dragonboat Festival and we wish you all a great Festival and tons of fun! Others, let me know your intention, cause I may end up out there by myself!

Till then!

Saturday, July 11

Good day everyone ...

I was waiting and hoping to get a better forecast for Saturday, but that just doesn't seem to be happening!

To quote Dave Philips from Environment Canada, this has been a "bummer of a summer"! It seems that if they're not calling for rain, then they're calling for a 'cold front'! Not that we want the wicked heat, but we do want some sun and warmth!!!

But, in our never-ending optimistic outlook on life, we'll still plan on our usual Saturday morning Walk & Run!

So, let's meet at Bushtukah for 9:00am and we'll take it from there! If it's just a gentle little rain, we can still do our walk/run. If it's lightning and thunder, well then maybe just breakfast?

Saturday, July 4

Hopefully the weather gods will look over us Saturday morning and allow us to do our walk/run and of course breakfast, without showering upon us! :)

I'm pretty confident that we'll get our run'/walk in before any rains, and who knows, maybe a good part of the day the sun will shine upon us! Especially after the past few days, I think we totally deserve some time without threat of rain or thunder!

So, come on out on Saturday and enjoy the exercise, outdoors and of course the great company!

Busting Out - Ottawa Festival race times

Hello everyone, here are the race times for Saturday and Sunday per an email from Lisa. Although I don't go on the walkathons , I still enjoy reading your weekly emails and keeping up with the news.
Sandra

Our first race on Saturday (Race 21) for both teams is at 11.10am, and we must be in the Staging area at 10.40am.

We will advise you after this race what time our second race will be. We will not know until Saturday evening whether we have a second race on Sunday.

On Sunday (Race 62) the Breast Cup is at 10.35 am and we must be in the Staging area at 10.05 am. The Flower Ceremony will occur after this.

Saturday, June 19

Hello everyone ...

I've been thinking that since a number of people are away this weekend, including myself, and a number of people are participating in the Dragonboat Festival, that perhaps we should cancel this Saturday's Triathlon ... Wall / Run and Breakfast!

Good Luck to all the dragonboaters! Looks like the weather will cooperate and the crowds will be enthusiastic!

For those not involved, try to get an opportunity to take in a race or 2 in and support our gals! Also, the Flower Ceremony is always a very special time! Someone might be able to post Busting Out and Busting Out Again's race times as well as the time of the Flower Ceremony on a Reply here.

Have a great week everyone and see you next weekend!

Jennifer

Too bad ill weather interfered with last week's picnic, but it will be rescheduled later in the summer!

This Saturday looks simply marvelous!!!!!!!!!

So, come on out Saturday morning and enjoy great weather, good exercise and fabulous company!!! We're meeting at Bushtukah at 9:00am and will be heading to Donna's for 10:15. It should be a good morning for 'breakfast on the patio'!

POSTPONED: Picnic at Maplelawn

The weather doesn't appear to cooperating, so I think we should postpone our pot luck picnic. It may not be raining in the morning but everything will be wet, so let's meet and eat at our usual spots: Bushtekka at 9:00 and Donna's at 10:10.

Saturday, May 30

Jennifer is away this week so I’m sending out the message about the Saturday W.R.A.P. (Walking, Running And Poling) location.

Let’s meet at Maplelawn gardens for a picnic this week, instead of our usual meeting place.

Location: Keg Manor (Maplelawn), 529 Richmond Road
Parking: At the back
Time: 9:00

Bring: Something for the potluck picnic (something easy!)

There are picnic tables in the garden where we will eat after our walk/run.

If the weather looks uncertain, please check the blog on Saturday morning to make sure the picnic is still on. I will post a confirmation by 8 am on Saturday.

Saturday, May 23: CANCELLED

Hello everyone ...

Based on all the replies I received, I've decided to 'officially' cancel Saturday morning walk/run this week.

It sure is a busy weekend for everyone, so go out and enjoy yourselves, whether at Chelsea, participating in the Great Glebe Garage sale, or anything else you may be up to.

We'll be back to normal next weekend.

Hello there to one and all ...

NOTE ... The picnic that was planned for Karen's this Saturday, will have to be cancelled. But all is not lost, as we have Donna's to fall back on! :)

We may have weather challenges this week, but stay tuned, as our weather can change a any moment! My prediction is that we'll be ok for our walk / run on Saturday morning.

So, we'll meet at Bushtukah by 9:00am and head out. There will be walkers & runners, so something for everyone! We'll meet at Donna's by 10:15 and hopefully can enjoy the patio!!!

Bike Maintenance Clinic & Ride

The WOWW Dragonboat Team is hosting a bike maintenance clinic for everyone and anyone with all proceeds going to the 'Terry Schwarzfeld Ottawa Daycare Centre' in Acco, Israel. The bike clinic will be run by Marg Terrett (an experienced rider with extensive training in bike repairs and bike tripping) as well as several experienced volunteers. WHEN: Saturday, May 30th (Rain or Shine … we will be setting up tents)
noon-1pm lunch, 1pm-3pm clinic, 3pm-4pm ride
(put your name on a waiting list for the morning session, if you are unable to come in the afternoon)

(613) 225-5428

Please reply to Linda at:
lindaconnell2@gmail.com and indicate the number of people coming. Don’t be disappointed … do it now. Payment is to be made the day of the clinic.

About Terry:
Terry is definitely here in spirit. She certainly would not have missed a bicycle maintenance course. When Terry retired from her job as Executive Director of a large Synagogue in Ottawa, she treated herself to a brand new custom-made bike because she planned on doing a lot of biking. Then another opportunity arose. Terry was elected as the Hadassah-WIZO National President.
Hadassah-WIZO is a volunteer organization which funds projects for Children, Healthcare and Women in Israel and Canada. One of the projects is a daycare centre for underprivileged children in Acco, Israel which Terry had recently visited. This centre has now been named the 'Terry Schwarzfeld Ottawa Daycare Centre' and the funds raised at this bicycle maintenance course will go directly to this cause in her memory.

Thank you for your support! J

Singin' in the Rain & Tip-toe through the Tulips - Fri, May 8

Here's my plan... a combination of Singin' in the Rain and Tip-toe Through the Tulips!!

We meet at Patterson Creek (Linden Terrace) where there's 2 hours of free, on-street parking.
Under umbrellas, we walk along the Canal to the flower beds at Dow's lake and admire the tulips, perhaps take a few photos and walk back to the cars.

Then we re-park closer to Bank Street and go to Starbucks or Bridgehead for some hot whatever.

Meet at 9:30.
Patterson Creek must be approached from Bank Street. It is one-way toward the canal, so you cannot enter it from the canal. It is mid-way between Pretoria Bridge and The Canal Ritz, right at the location of the lovely arched stone bridge and pond flowing into the canal, across the pond from First Ave School.
Check an Ottawa map for further directions... or link below.

Please let me know if you are coming. Thanks,
Peggy

Saturday May 16

Hi Jennifer

I do not have all the names for the group so I thought perhaps you could send this message out to them.

I was wondering if anyone was interested in having a potluck "lunch/brunch" like we did last year when we went to Maplelawn. I would like to extend an invitation to everyone to have one on Saturday May 16th at my place. I am staying at 540 Courtenay Avenue. This is just a few blocks east of Woodroffe Avenue and we are the fourth house up from Byron. Would be very close for walking on the parkway but would give us a chance to do a different area on it. We could meet here, do our run/walk, and then come back and eat. Big enough back yard if the weather is nice - otherwise we can be inside.

I realize that that is the long weekend but unfortunately it is the only one I can offer. If you are interested and think you would be able to attend can you please e-mail me at

Saturday, April 25

Can you really believe it? This is going to be one beautiful weekend!!!!!! If you haven't heard, we're going to get 2 days of sunny, glorious days in the 20's!!!!! And it's still April!!!!

So, isn't that a sign that we all should be out exercising? You can join us Saturday morning, 9:00am at Bushtukah's.

Please try parking on the street and let the customers park in their lot. There usually is tons of room on the street and since we go to breakfast after, we're not taking up their customers' spaces.

Walking, running, poling or any combination, it's up to you! Chances are there's always someone to join you. Then, by around 10:20 we're off to Donna's for breakfast!

Breakfast will then be around 10:15am at Donna's!

Good day everyone ...

Even though it's Easter weekend, there will be some of us still meeting to run / walk, and of course go to breakfast! Chances are there will be a little extra treats this weekend, so Saturday is a good time to get some exercise in ... :)

The weather promises to be nicer ... and I will even forecast 'No Rain'!

So, come on out and join us for a walk or a run. We're meeting at Bushtukah's at 9:00.
Breakfast is at Donna's around 10:15.

Saturday April 4

Good day everyone ... Beautiful day today, super sunshine and little wind! This is April though, and as the saying goes, "April Showers bring May Flowers!", we do have to put up with a little of the wet stuff now and then. Unfortunately, 'now and then' may mean Saturday morning ... Best thing to do is dress appropriately and ALSO bring a change of top so you can still enjoy breakfast!

So we'll meet at Bushtukah for 9:00 am and the runners and walkers will head out on their various routes. Breakfast at Donna's will be around 10:15.

I'm still wondering if anyone is interested in selling their poles?

Saturday, March 21

Just back from Florida where I had a fabulous, activity filled vacation visiting Anka and Fred. We spent a super day visiting Jean and Patrick at their new home in Punta Gorda! Everything, including the weather was marvelous!!! They both say a big HELLO to everyone!

Weather is great for tomorrow! Whether you're walking or running, it will be a great morning! Looking forward to seeing ya there ... 9:00am at Bushtukah's, followed by Donna's around 10:15.

For those of you that know her, Chris's Mom is joining us! (That's her in the picture, opening a nice bottle of wine!).

Cheers!

Saturday, March 14

Jennifer is away visiting Anka and Jean in Florida (lucky dogs!), but hopefully lots of folks will show up for our Saturday WRAP (Walk, Run, and Pole) session. (I think I'll have to change it to WRAPS to include snowshoe).

We'll meet as usual at Bushtakka, with breakfast at Donna's around 10:10. I hope to see you there!

Friday Ski day, March 13

Well, it looks like it is not in the cards for us to ski on Friday. It might be OK, but it might not.
So- let's try snowshoeing ... which also might be hiking on solid ice!

Meet at P. 6 ... McKenzie King Estates, at 10:00. There is a lovely snow-shoe specific trail from there.

It may have warmed up at bit by 10:00 .. let's hope so!

Afterwards we could go into Old Chelsea and have a coffee, seeing as there is no cabin in the vacinity of where we wil be snow-shoeing.

Please let me know if you are coming - Thanks!
Peg

Directions to P. 6 - McKenzie King.

From the raised intersection in Old Chelsea, turn LEFT.
Follow this road for about 3 km, crossing over the parkway.
When almost at P 7 (it should seem familiar)
look for SWAMP ROAD on your left and turn Left onto Swamp road.
After 1 km, at the STOP sign, turn Right.
After about 3oo metres, see a white fence on the left and turn in there.
You will see the parking lot.

Saturday, March 7

OK everyone ... looks like this Saturday is going to be absolutely beautiful!!!!!! It's also the night that we turn the clocks ahead an hour!

What better day than this to get out, exercise with friends and enjoy the day!!!

I will not be out for the next 2 weeks, but will return on the 21st. That is no reason to miss a day, especially as the weather has turned the corner and definitely improved. Maybe I'll get Chris to send out an e-mail next week. I expect that there might not be any snowshoeing, just walking for sure and possibly a few running.

So, meet at Bushtukah for 9:00am, set out on your various routes and then back to Donna's for breakfast by 10:15.

Saturday, Feb 28

Hello Everyone ...
Looks like another glorious Saturday, though a little unpredictable. Spring is certainly in the air, just that it's a little difficult to harness! Maybe a little snow, a little rain and lots of sun thrown in to make the next few days interesting!

Just think, this is already the last (partial) weekend of February and then we're into March ... seems like winter is going by quite quickly!

Looks like a few of the regulars won't be around this weekend, including myself, so I think it's a great idea to "reply to all" with your intentions, especially if you're planning on going. Others will want to know if anyone is going to be there.

So, meeting at Bushtukah on Saturday at 9:00am. From there, walkers and or runners can go their ways and meet up for breakfast!

Have a great week!

Jennifer

Skiing - Friday, Feb 27

Hi All,

Because I will be out of town this weekend, I will not be organizing any Friday skiing.

However, I hope you will put Friday, March 6 on your calander.
It is the last day for Women on skis for this year/
The day will be at Nakkertok South, and is always a great highlight of the ski year.
Pot luck lunch, great draw prizes, and, oh!, did I mention wonderful trails to ski on!!

Saturday Feb 21

Well another week and another crazy forecast for weather! Not sure if it's going to snow or have sun, be cold with a windchill or mild if the winds don't blow ....

So, we just go out there and conquer anything that is thrown our way!

Hard to believe it though, but we are a good part of the way through winter and have about 2 weeks till Daylight Savings time. You can already tell that the days are getting longer and even the cold days aren't as cold as they felt a few weeks ago! Guess that Ground Hog wasn't totally correct in his forecast ...

So, we'll meet Saturday at 9:00 at Bushtukah, where the walkers and runners can head out from. The snowshoers can head down to the end of Churchill and head out from there.

Breakfast will be at Donna's by around 10:15.

Once we get past the nasty weather on Thursday, we shall have some great weather on Saturday! Looks like we turned the page on those 'rainy Saturdays''!

We'll plan on walking and snowshoeing again this Saturday ... though we've lost one of our snowshoers ... as Anka and Fred have headed off to Florida until April. I think that she'll reall miss the snow and cold, don't you think?

We'll meet by 9:00 at Bushtukah, where the walkers will head out from. The snowshoers drive over to the end of Churchill and head out from there. We'll meet back at Donna's for breakfast by 10:15am. If the forecast holds out, you may need sunscreen for Saturday!

No skiing this Friday - Feb 13

I delayed writing this email in hopes that the weather forecast would change and snow would come in tonight. But - it didn't! So - there will be no Peggy-organized skiing for this Friday ... we might think about water-skiing though!

If anyone else wants to organize a Friday activity, please go ahead!

Next week is Women on Skis on Thursday in the Lac Phillipe sector - assuming that there will be fresh snow-fall by then!

Best 6 Weeks of Winter are here

G'day Everyone ...

"Imagination is more important than knowledge."--- Albert Einstein

Well, chances are tomorrow won't be the typical freezing cold of the past few Saturdays, I'm just not sure exactly what we'll have! So be prepared for snow or rain, sun or cloud and cool or not so cool!

With Wiarton Willy seeing his shadow on Monday, it actually means that the BEST 6 weeks of winter are now here! The bitter cold days are behind us, there will be more sunny days and of course our days are getting noticeably longer! Only 4 weeks till Daylight Savings!

This is a great thing to celebrate and what better way to do that than to come out on Saturday mornings and join us for the walks/runs or snowshoeing, followed by the necessary refueling of breakfast!

We're meeting at Bushtukah by 9:00am and will head for Donna's for breakfast by 10:15!

Best Wishes to Sue Bailey and Peggy who are participating in the Winterlude Triathlon tomorrow morning. Cudos to Sue, who is doing her first Winterlude Triathlon and Peggy, who has competed in all but 1 of these Events. You gals Rock!

So, just a short while ago we thought that 3 straight weeks of rain was a pain ... careful what you wish for ... What's a little cold weather, eh? After all, we live in Canada!

We're still on for this week, 9:00am at Bushtukah. So far, Dianne, Chris, Anka and I will be snowshoeing, anyone else is welcome to join us! To get more time actually snowshoeing, we'll probably meet at Bushtukah and then drive 1 car over to the end of Churchill and head out from there.

Walkers and runners, dress warm, especially remembering to have a scarf or something to cover your face. Very important is the idea of layering and not having cotton next to your skin. It'll be so nice and sunny, don't forget to bring your sunglasses!!

PLEASE send out a reply so this week at least we know if you're coming or not. It would be pretty cold waiting for people and they not come out. Even if you just meet us for breakfast, let me know, as I tend to make a reservation as we walk by Donna's.

See you Saturday morning! Breakfast right after at around 10:10am

Jennifer

Women on Skis

This Friday is a day for Women on Skis. With fresh snow in the forecast for Wednesday, conditions should be fabulous!!

See web-site
http://www.nakkertok.ca/womenonskis/

We will meet at Mooney's Bay track area for a waxing demo, the break into experience / ability groups for lessons. Arrive at 9:30 and be ready to ski by 10:00.

These lessons are a great way to begin the ski season, so do try to take advantage of the day if you can.

Cost for Woman on skis is $6/day + $2 trail fees. All money gathered by Women on Skis this year will go to support The Well and St. Joe's Womens' Centre.

A Social Lunch will be organized at a designated restaurant.

Hope to see you there.

Skating, Jan 3

Does anyone want to go for a skate on the canal after breakfast. I think that it would be fun. Bring your skates.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Well, one of my Resolutions was to "Not put off to tomorrow, what I can do today" otherwise known as Procrastination!!!!!!! I'm slipping on that one already and it's only the 2nd day of January!! LOL :) I had planned to have sent this out a day or 2 ago, but let's just say I'm giving my Resolution another shot!

If you're like me, you probably have been having some delicious meals and plenty of spectacular sweets, not to mention the odd eggnog! No time like the present to start the new year off on the right foot, so come out and join us tomorrow morning, Sat., at Bushtukah, at 9:00am. There's something for everyone, walking and/or running, sunshine and cool crisp fresh air!!!! Plus great conversation both during run/walk and at breakfast!

If you haven't been out in a while, no problem, cause like they say, "Out with the old and in with the new!!!!!" There's no time like the present to start new habits!!!!!
